Review of Laphroaig Cairdeas Origin by Murray Cohen.
Iain McCallum, Master of Malts for Morrison Bowmore Distillers described this whisky with "intensity as its middle name…. where your nose is slapped in the face with seaweed". This one is crafted with whisky from the first Laphroaig Cairdeas barrel. The total vatting includes whiskies ranging from 13 to 21 years.
The Laphroaig Cairdeas Origin was bottled at 51.2% ABV and is priced at Canadian $99.99 and if you are lucky you will occasionally find it available from specialist online whisky shops such as
The Whisky Exchange.
Murray Cohen's Tasting Notes:
Colour: Chardonnay.
Nose: Cedar wood chest impacts immediately with crab apples and menthol essences. Apple pie like grandma used to make with a touch of peppermint shows its stuff. Late apple n’ spice beignet.
Taste: Full bodied. Oily, bursts of peat and spearmint gum and warming breathe mint. This cask strength whisky is not shy; it lets it all hang out.
Finish: Long, peat and strong medicinal effervescence. The seaweed wraps around your tonsils and you still want more.
Comment: There’s a lot going on here with the 51.2% ABV and it works. The flow from nose to finish is inviting. There is a sense of some age here.
