Review of Highland Park 21 Year Old by Murray Cohen.
This whisky was originally created for
global travel retail and duty free
kiosks/stores. The 21 Year was named the
Best Single Malt of the year at the
World Whisky Awards 2009. This one has a
slight emphasis on American Oak in
maturation (less sherry influence to
release more of the smokiness).
The Highland Park 21 Year Old was bottled at 47.5% ABV and is priced at Canadian $399.99 / UK £143.00, it is available from specialist online whisky shop
The Whisky Exchange.
Murray Cohen's Tasting Notes:
Colour: Amber.
Nose: Grand aromatic tobacco leaves set the tone. Caramelized bananas satisfy. Mediterranean spices make an appearance and a wine-dipped cigar drops by.
Taste: Full bodied. Cream soda merges with generalized sweet fizzy tones and chocolate cake. Time brings some coffee grounds note with a sweetish tinge.
Finish: Long, espresso and spice surface together. Chocolate syrup entwines around bulrushes/cattails. Peat flashes repeatedly and lights up a pleasant aftertaste.
Comment: A most enjoyable dram but does not rise to the level of the 25 or 30 year. It seems like a distant cousin.
