Jameson Crested Review

22nd April 2016

Jameson launches the deliciously rich pot still blend Jameson Crested worldwide.

Jameson Crested ReviewA few of you may have been lucky enough to get hold of a bottle of the superb pot still rich Irish blended whiskey Jameson Crested Ten in the past, a whiskey which has rarely been seen outside of Ireland and has acquired itself somewhat of a cult following from Irish whiskey fans who have had the pleasure of it. I am pleased to tell you that that Jameson have announced the international launch of Jameson Crested, note they have dropped the word Ten from the title of the whiskey as it was a little confusing as it did not refer to the age of the whiskey in the bottle, it wasn't 10 year old.

Launching internationally from April, the new Jameson Crested is certain to further increase excitement around Irish whiskey across the globe.

Jameson Crested is a celebration of the first drops of whiskey that were bottled, sealed and labelled at the Bow Street Distillery in Dublin, marking the moment in time in 1963 when Jameson took full control of the whiskey making process, from grain to glass. Up until then, distillers – including the Jameson Distillery – sold barrels of whiskey to bonders to bottle themselves before selling on to Irish whiskey consumers. However, reports of a handful of whiskey bonders watering down their whiskey in the 1960s led Jameson to complete the process inside the distillery walls to protect the quality of the whiskey.

Jameson Crested is a triple-distilled Irish blended whiskey containing a high percentage of rich pot still Irish whiskey, I believe around 60% and the remaining 40% of the whiskey is made up of Irish grain whiskey. The whiskey has been matured in a high proportion of sherry casks, as well as bourbon barrels.

Jameson Crested is presented in a new look design which reflects the rich history of the brand as well as the whiskey's premium quality. The bottle’s tapered neck is left uncovered so that the cork which has replaced the screw cap found on the Crested Ten, can be clearly seen and is complemented by an authentic seal, which gently tears when opened for the first time. The new bottle design is used across the family of Jameson premium whiskeys that celebrates the rich heritage of Jameson, including Jameson Black Barrel.

Jameson Crested was bottled at 40% ABV and will be available from April 2016 from these specialist Whisky Shops with an RRP of £29.99 or global equivalent per 70cl bottle.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A lovely enticing mix of Irish pot still fruitiness with just a touch of sherry fruitiness which balances well with a touch of ginger, vanilla, sweet coconut and mild pot still spices.

Taste: Creamy vanilla, layers of gentle sherried fruit and pot still spices, coconut, a lovely gentle Demerara sweetness, a touch of pepper. The delicious mild pot still spices increase with each mouthful.

Finish: The taste just lingers long into the finish, delicious pot still spices, vanilla and sherry carry on long into the finish, slowly fading to leave mild drying oak spice.

Comment: To steal a phrase from the now gone but not forgotten Northern Irish comedian Frank Carson, "its a cracker". This may well have been one of Irish whiskey's little known secrets but the secret is out now. A big step up in quality from the very good standard Jameson blend and at under £30 for a bottle it is an outstanding Irish whiskey for your money.

SMW Blended Whisky Score 93/100
