Claxton's Dalswinton Series Springbank 30 Year Old Review

24th October 2024
Review of Claxton's Dalswinton Series Springbank 30 Year Old, a silky smooth delivery where the barley sugars, vanilla and vibrant sweet oak spices lead, followed by a touch of apple and a combination of zesty orange and lemon, pineapple. A wee touch of pepper and a lovely touch of peat hanging around the background.

Claxton's Dalswinton Series Springbank 30 Year OldClaxton's Dalswinton Series Springbank 30 Year Old is one of five whiskies in Claxton's second batch of releases in their Dalswinton Series.

All the the whiskies in this release have been distilled at a renowned coastal Scotch whisky distillery, this one was distilled at Springbank in Campbeltown and was matured for 30 years in a Hogshead Cask before being bottled at 44.5% ABV and only 100 bottles were drawn from the cask.

Hailing from one of Scotland's most revered coastal distilleries, this Springbank 30 Year Old is said to deliver the complexity you'd expect from such a mature whisky. Sweet and spicy, with notes of tropical fruits and bubble gum, it offers an exceptional dram from start to finish.

The decanter features an engraving of Patrick Millar’s steam engine. In 1788, the first steamboat in Britain sailed across Dalswinton Loch, a groundbreaking project funded by Millar, then owner of the Dalswinton Estate. This historic voyage marked the first steam-powered boat journey in the United Kingdom.

Matured in a Hogshead Cask. Bottled at 44.5% ABV. Non-chill filtered and naturally coloured. £1,795

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Gentle sweet vanilla, distant lemon citrus and fresh pear, pepper and just a slight whiff of smoke.

Taste: A silky smooth delivery where the barley sugars, vanilla and vibrant sweet oak spices lead, followed by a touch of apple and a combination of zesty orange and lemon, pineapple. A wee touch of pepper and a lovely touch of peat hanging around the background.

Finish: Long, the vanilla and fruit bows out first, a little more pepper and gentle peat, the sweet oak and spices peak and slowly bitter out.

Comment: A rather shy gentle nose, and it takes a couple of mouthfuls for the flavours to build in the palate but they are worth it.

SMW Whisky Score 85/100
