Claxton's Dalswinton Series Bowmore 30 Year Old Review

24th October 2024
Review of Claxton's Dalswinton Series Bowmore 30 Year Old, an absolutely delicious example of just how well Bowmore does in a quality sherry cask. The classic Bowmore sea-salt peatiness becomes more apparent with each mouthful and combined with the sherry it makes for a outstanding dram.

Claxton's Dalswinton Series Bowmore 30 Year OldClaxton's Dalswinton Series Bowmore 30 Year Old is one of five whiskies in Claxton's second batch of releases in their Dalswinton Series.

All the the whiskies in this release have been distilled at a renowned coastal Scotch whisky distillery, this one was distilled at Bowmore on the Isle of Islay and was matured for 30 years in a Oloroso Sherry Cask before being bottled at 43.5% ABV and only 100 bottles were drawn from the cask.

This Bowmore 30 Year Old is said to be a stellar representation of an Islay distillery, perfectly capturing its coastal origins. Claxton's describe it as sweet peat combined with hints of seaweed and a burst of tropical fruits, creating an extraordinary dram.

The decanter features a scene from 1786, when Patrick Miller, owner of the Dalswinton Estate, first met the renowned poet Robert Burns. This meeting ultimately led to Burns relocating to the area and becoming a tenant at Ellisland Farm, with Miller as his landlord.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A Bowmore sea-salty peatiness, some gentle pepper and a touch of oak spice balances well with a delicious rich sherried sweetness with burnt raisins and sultanas and some toffee to make for a very enticing nose.

Taste: Sherry soaked burnt raisins and sultanas. Ripe peach, spiced vanilla toffee and a touch of cinnamon and dry ginger. As on the nose, a sea-salty peatiness reminds you of just where this whisky came from.

Finish: A lovely long finish. Burnt raisins and slightly tangy orange infused with oak spices slowly fade to leave a mildly drying Bowmore sea salt peatiness.

Comment: An absolutely delicious example of just how well Bowmore does in a quality sherry cask. I do enjoy Bowmore's quite unique peat smoke and I know many others do also. Undoubtedly this one is for those who like some sherry with their Bowmore and its 30 years maturation has made this one a cracker. The classic Bowmore sea-salt peatiness becomes more apparent with each mouthful and combined with the sherry it makes for a outstanding dram, if your pockets are deep enough go on and spoil yourself.

SMW Whisky Score 93/100
