Claxton's Dalswinton Series Bunnahabhain 33 Year Old Review

24th October 2024
Review of Claxton's Dalswinton Series Bunnahabhain 33 Year Old, an elegant, full bodied, sumptuousness mature sherry rich dram.

Claxton's Dalswinton Series Bunnahabhain 33 Year Old is one of five whiskies in Claxton's second batch of releases in their Dalswinton Series.

All the the whiskies in this release have been distilled at a renowned coastal Scotch whisky distillery, this one was distilled at Bunnahabhain on the Isle of Islay and was matured for 33 years in a Oloroso Sherry Cask before being bottled at 48.6% ABV and only 100 bottles were drawn from the cask.

Bunnahabhain Distillery stands apart from its Islay counterparts, it is well known for crafting unpeated yet richly full-bodied whisky although they do produce some peated whisky but not on this occasion. This unpeated Bunnahabhain 33 Year Old, matured over decades and is said to showcase the distillery’s signature complexity and character.

The bottle's etching illustrates the Roman fort that once stood on the banks of the River Nith. Built in 80 AD, this large fort, located within the present-day Dalswinton Estate, housed over 2,000 Roman infantry and cavalry. It was one of the northernmost Roman outposts of its kind.

Claxton's Dalswinton Series Bunnahabhain 33 Year Old Review

Matured in a Oloroso Sherry Cask. Bottled at 48.6% ABV. Non-chill filtered and naturally coloured. RRP £775

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A sumptuous mix of enticing sherried raisin, sugared almond and apple with a slightly salted hazelnut edge and a touch of vanilla.

Taste: Deliciously juicy sherry infused mature oak tannins leads with burnt raisin and orange which is balanced by some apple and plum. A little sweet toffee and vibrant sweet oak spice lightly coated in milk chocolate.

Finish: The fruity sherried sweetness bitters out first followed by the oak tannins, a slight mocha, a touch of late cinnamon and a lingering mildly drying gentle oak spiciness.

Comment: There really is a fantastic nose on this lovely sherry oak mature Bunnahabhain and the deliciously juicy sherry and mature oak on the palate does not disappoint. An elegant, full bodied, sumptuous mature sherry rich dram.

SMW Whisky Score 92/100
