Claxton's Dalswinton Series Clynelish 30 Year Old Review

24th October 2024
Review of Claxton's Dalswinton Series Clynelish 30 Year Old, it offers a mix of waxed lemon citrus, grapefruit and melon with a oaky edge, a very gentle touch of vanilla and heather honey. A little like a Highland Park with the peat removed, brine gives it a coastal feel.

Claxton's Dalswinton Series Clynelish 30 Year OldClaxton's Dalswinton Series Clynelish 30 Year Old is one of five whiskies in Claxton's second batch of releases in their Dalswinton Series.

All the the whiskies in this release have been distilled at a renowned coastal Scotch whisky distillery, this one was distilled at Clynelish in the Northern Highlands of Scotland and was matured for 30 years in a Bourbon Barrel before being bottled at 44.4% ABV and only 100 bottles were drawn from the cask.

Located on Scotland's northeast coast, Clynelish Distillery is famed for producing a rich, waxy distillate that stands out in the whisky world. After 30 years of maturation, this whisky is said to have retained its signature waxy character while bursting with vibrant stone fruits.

The design on the decanter is linked to the legend of John "The Red" Comyn. According to local folklore, in 1306, Comyn hid his treasure in Comyn’s Pool on the Dalswinton Estate shortly before his fatal encounter with Robert the Bruce, the future King of Scotland.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Gentle vanilla and butterscotch with a wee bit of a honeyed edge, some distant apple and melon

Taste: A mix of waxed lemon citrus, grapefruit and melon with a oaky edge, a very gentle touch of vanilla and heather honey. A late oak spiciness.

Finish: Still a bit of heather honey, the grapefruit and melon now with a brine edge hang in there for a bit before giving way to the oak to have the the final slightly drying word.

Comment: A little like a Highland Park with the peat removed, the brine gives it a coastal feel.

SMW Whisky Score 84/100
