Review of Gordon &
MacPhail Caol Ila Cask Strength 2004 by Murray Cohen.
Gordon
& MacPhail Cask Strength Caol Ila 2004
was distilled on the 8th December 2004
and matured in First Fill and Refill Sherry Butts
#306610, #306611, #306612 & #306623 and
bottled on the 13th February 2015 at 59.3%
ABV.
As its name suggests this is from G &
M's Cask Strength range of whiskies.
Bottled at natural cask strength and
colour directly from oak casks without
chill filtering. The highly individual
label on each bottle indicates the cask
number and the bottling date, along with
the distillation year and strength.
Original distillery cask strength
bottlings of Caol Ila are rare these days so it is
great to see bottlings like this from G
& M to keep us peat heads happy.
Murray Cohen's Tasting Notes:
Colour:
Gold.
Nose:
A classic Islay expression. The sweetish peat
marries with delectable 'sticky lice'. Medicinal
ingredients and seaweed take a much deserved bow.
This cask strength dram is far from shy but not
overpowering.
Taste:
Full-bodied. Peaty sweet with a sherry thrust; the
sugary elements are like the icing on a single malt
cake.
Finish:
Long, black cherries and peat, red liquorice and
Black Forest cake.
Comment:
This 59.3% ABV expression is like a dream fulfilled.
The sherry foundation generates a striking result.
SMW Score
92.5/100
