Review of Benromach 15 Year Old by Murray Cohen.
This
15 year old expression was added to the Benromach
core range of classic Speyside whiskies back in May
2015.
As with all Benromach whiskies, the 15 year old is
hand-crafted by just three distillers using the
finest natural ingredients at the Forres distillery.
Aged in a combination of first fill
bourbon and sherry casks it is bottled at 43% ABV
and has an RRP of
£48.99 (prices may vary in export
markets because of duty and import
taxes). It is available from from the
LCBO and for worldwide delivery from specialist
online whisky shops such as
Master of Malt
Murray Cohen's Tasting Notes:
Colour:
Amber.
Nose:
A plethora of unique aromas enter awareness. Ink
blotter rises to the occasion, saltiness, lint, a
vague outline of medicinal fragments, unexpected
smokiness, hint of Fisherman’s Friend lozenges,
caramelized Vidalia onions and whole lemon infused
with sweetness. Late red liquorice on a peat bed
blooms.
Taste:
Medium to full-bodied. Meaty and it seems to pull
more weight than its 43% ABV. Peat and spice sail
along a cherry syrup waterway. There is robustness
here.
Finish:
Long, the concentrated berry fruit comes to the fore
and coasts along uninterrupted.
Comment:
This is an "old style" Speyside which brings
smokiness to the occasion.
SMW Score
88.5/100
