Review of Murray McDavid Lochside 1981 20 Year Old by Murray Cohen.
The Lochside Distillery had a relatively short life, established in brewery buildings in Montrose by Joseph Hobbs in 1957. During its short life it produced grain and malt whisky intermittently until 1970. Allied Distillers acquired the distillery in 1992 and Lochside was closed shortly after.
This Murray McDavid Lochside 20 Year Old was distilled in 1981, refill sherry cask matured and bottled in 2001 at 46% ABV.
Murray Cohen's Tasting Notes:
Colour: Light mahogany.
Nose: Spice with cinnamon pulling the load, allspice and a jaunt over to the scents of the local butcher shop. A brown sugar note perseverates.
Taste: Dark fruit with concentrated syrupy sweetness and mild caramel fudge. Full-bodied and somewhat drying.
Finish: Long, fresh dates hit with full effervescence. Desirable oaky tannin resides here. Late sugar n’ spice.
Comment: There is intensity to this whisky that entices.
