Review of Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask Brora 1981 18 Year Old by Murray Cohen.
This Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask bottling of Brora dates back to before the Laing brothers went their separate ways, it was distilled in 1981 and bottled in 1999 at 50% ABV.
Murray Cohen's Tasting Notes:
Colour: Hay/cloudy.
Nose: Medicine cabinet explosion with seaweed salad and salt water galore. Roasted artichoke hearts on the BBQ provide a delectable chorus. Pistachio nut paste surfaces late.
Taste: Full-bodied, drying, a nutty melange but the peat is the star here and the spice enchanting.
Finish: Long, bold yet there is a finesse here that stands out.
***A few drops of water softens the nose, heightens the spice on the palate and gives the finish minty peat with a sweet exclamation mark.
Comment: This is a unique dram that moans the loss of a truly wonderful distillery.
