Grant’s Elementary Oxygen 8 Year Old Review

8th February 2016

Review of Grant's Elementary Oxygen 8 Year Old Scotch Blended Grain Whisky.

Grant’s Elementary Oxygen 8 Year Old ReviewGrant's Elementary Oxygen 8 year old is one of three new whiskies in the new travel retail exclusive Grant's Elementary Scotch whisky range.

William Grant & Sons has created the range to highlight the scientific elements involved in the traditional whisky making process and to demonstrate the influence each scientific element has on the final flavour of the whisky. Each blend explores the impact of its stated element on our whisky, and its age statement relates to its position in the Periodic Table of Elements.

Oxygen differs from the other whiskies in the range in that it is a Scotch Blended Grain whisky, no single malts in this blend. Oxygen as I am sure you will all recall from your school chemistry lessons, is the 8th element, it is lifted carefully from the spirit during William Grant's unique vacuum distillation process at their Girvan grain distillery. In an oxygen deficient environment, distillation can occur at a lower temperature, producing a crisp, sweetened flavour profile. William Grant say that it is the oxygen, or lack of, that gives this grain whisky its silky smoothness.

Grant's Elementary Oxygen 8 year old was matured for at least eight years in ex-Bourbon American oak casks. Bottled at 40% ABV in a 1 litre bottle, 20cl bottle and 5cl test tubes, it is currently available from Paris Charles de Gaulle, Paris Orly and Nice airports.

If you have no travel plans in the near future don't worry you will find the current William Grant's whisky range including the exceptionally smooth Girvan Single Grain whisky range available for worldwide delivery from specialist whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose:  Fresh, clean, a gentle creamy vanilla sweetness, touch of coconut and a little hint of pear.

Taste: Medium bodied. A deliciously smooth creamy vanilla delivery soon joined by the coconut from the nose and some gentle fizzy oak spices.

Finish: The mildly sweet creamy vanilla fades first leaving the lingering fizzy slightly drying oak spices.

Comment: No surprises, except for how good this is, this is a young blended grain whisky and a very good one. Exceptionally creamy smooth on the palate which fades slowly to leave some energetic young oak spices. It is a shame you need a passport to get hold of this, if they put this on the shelves of the domestic market at a decent price it would sell itself once tasted. If you see this in the airport don't walk by it, do yourself a favour and pick up a bottle.

SMW Scotch Blended Grain Whisky Score 90/100
