Grant’s Elementary Copper 29 Year Old Review

8th February 2016

Review of Grant's Elementary Copper 29 Year Old Scotch blended whisky.

Grant’s Elementary Copper 29 Year Old ReviewUp until now the outstanding Grant's 25 year old sat at the pinnacle of the Grant's Scotch blended whisky range but that has now been replaced by the new travel retail exclusive Grant's Elementary Copper 29 year old.

Part of the new Grant's Elementary range which comprises of three whiskies which William Grant & Sons has created to highlight the scientific elements involved in the traditional whisky making process and to demonstrate the influence each scientific element has on the final flavour of the whisky.

This premium expression celebrates the very essential role copper plays during whisky making. As most Single malt whiskies drinkers will know, single malt whisky is distilled in copper pot stills before maturation, but did you know that the other component part of a Scotch blended whisky, grain whisky, is produced in a column still where it reacts with sacrificial copper plates inside the column still to smooth out any sulphuric elements in the spirit, extract the harsh flavours and produce a delicately balanced flavour.

The Grant's Elementary Copper 29 year old was matured for at least 29 years in a combination of American and European oak casks including Girvan Grain and peated whiskies. These casks were hand selected by Master Blender, Brian Kinsman to create this new blend which will be bottled in a 70cl bottle at 40% ABV.

It is currently available for a sneak preview at Paris Charles de Gaulle, Paris Orly and Nice airports and is due to be released for purchase later this year. Meanwhile you will find the outstanding Grant's 25 year old available for worldwide delivery from specialist whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose:  Lovely mature oak enriched with sweet toffee and a teasing touch of exotic fruit.

Taste: The grain shows first with deliciously mature honeyed, vanilla oaky notes leading, some lovely gentle fizzy spices and a distant smokiness, the sugars are gentle this is all joined by some sharp marmalade, rich fruit and some grassy barley.

Finish: Long, fizzy spices and rich fruit slowly fades leaving the mildly drying mature oak.

Comment: A lovely mature, complex Scotch blended whisky fit to rival any mature single malts. The grain whisky has its say first on the palate but not without a contribution from the malt whisky in the blend and after 29 years in a cask the oak has its say also.

SMW Scotch Blended Whisky Score 93/100
