Grant’s Elementary Carbon 6 Year Old Review

8th February 2016

Review of Grant's Elementary Carbon 6 Year Old Scotch blended whisky.

Grant’s Elementary Carbon 6 Year Old ReviewGrant's Elementary Carbon 6 year old is the entry level whisky in the new travel retail exclusive Grant's Elementary Scotch blended whisky range.

Carbon is one of three new whiskies which form the Grant's Elementary range which William Grant & Sons has created to highlight the scientific elements involved in the traditional whisky making process and to demonstrate the influence each scientific element has on the final flavour of the whisky. Each blend explores the impact of its stated element on our whisky, and its age statement relates to its position in the Periodic Table of Elements.

Carbon or char, is the sixth element, it is found in the peat and in charred casks in which the whisky matures. To emphasize the carbon influence on whisky this was matured exclusively in heavily charred oak casks for at least six years. For this blend, Master Blender, Brian Kinsman and his team selected single malts, as well as peated and grain whiskies.

Grant's Elementary Carbon 6 year old was bottled at 40% ABV and is available in a 1 litre bottle, 20cl bottle and 5cl test tubes and it is currently available from Paris Charles de Gaulle, Paris Orly and Nice airports.

If you have no travel plans in the near future don't worry you will find the current Grant's whisky range including the outstanding Grant's 25 year old available for worldwide delivery from specialist whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose:   A very shy nose which doesn't want to give much away, a little sweetness and fruit.

Taste: A musty very gentle oakiness leads and remains always in the background. Gentle creamy vanilla reveals itself through the oak and is joined by some gentle mouth coating orange which adds body and richness to the pleasure.

Finish: The lovely musty, almost smoky oak lingers but doesn't overpower as it is kept in check by the sweet vanilla, rich sweetness and very delicate but persistent orange.

Comment: Great to see a company put a young age statement on there blended whisky, William Grant consistently produces some of the best blended whiskies in Scotland and this is another one. I am sure you are all familiar with the excellent standard Grant's Family Reserve blend, without a doubt Grant's Carbon is of a higher quality. I didn't get the price of this but I suspect it is a damn good buy as far as price/quality goes. A very interesting well constructed and most importantly very enjoyable Scotch blended whisky. I suspect that there has been some much older than the 6 year old age statement whisky gone into this blend.

SMW Scotch Blended Whisky Score 88/100
