Meikle Tòir The Turbo 5 Year Old 2023 Edition Review

4th October 2023
Review of the new Meikle Tòir The Turbo 5 Year Old 2023 Edition, delicious honey infused intense peat with a lovely oak spiced edge leads piggy backing on equally delicious sugar charged sherried fruit which is quickly joined by some lovely coffee notes and some young vibrant oak spice.

Meikle Tòir The Turbo 5 Year OldMeikle Tòir The Turbo 5 Year Old 2023 Edition is one of four whiskies recently unveiled by independent Scotch whisky distillery The GlenAllachie under their new peated Scotch single malt whisky brand Meikle Tòir (pronounced mee-kuhl tor).

Meikle Tòir The Turbo is an extremely limited annual bottling, this dram captures the heart of the peated distillate with the highest phenol content. Their are only 2,500 bottles of the 2023 Edition available, it has been matured in three American virgin oak casks and five Oloroso Sherry hogsheads for five years. The resulting whisky is said to present a robust peat presence as you can imagine with a phenol content of 71 PPM, hence its name 'The Turbo', accompanied by notes of toasted honeycomb, burnt orange peel, and worn leather.

Ronan Currie Assistant Blender commented on The Turbo saying: "A delicious amalgamation of medium toasted and medium charred American virgin oak, first-fill Oloroso Sherry casks, and intense St. Fergus mainland peat; The Turbo offers up rich chocolate, cinnamon spice and campfire smoke in perfect harmony."

Meikle Tòir The Turbo 5 Year Old 2023 Edition is bottled at 50% ABV, it is
naturally coloured and non-chill filtered and has a RRP of £51 and will be available from specialist online whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt

Meikle Tòir The Turbo 5 Year Old Review

Bottled at 50% ABV, naturally coloured and non-chill filtered.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Surprisingly a wee bit of a shy gentle nose at first sniff given the headline 71 PPM but dig deep and you are rewarded with notes of light honeyed peat smoke, a touch of sweet peppery spice, chocolate, coffee, sultana and raisin, a touch of orange citrus.

Taste: Delicious honey infused intense peat with a lovely oak spiced edge leads piggy backing on equally delicious sugar charged sherried fruit which is quickly joined by some lovely coffee notes and some young vibrant oak spice.

Finish: A deliciously long turbo charged, sherried, peaty finish which mirrors the taste notes but the sherried oak spice has had a turbo boost.

Comment: This is certainly not turbo charged on the nose, it actually lost a few marks for its surprisingly shy nose which doesn't quite let you know of the delicious peaty, sherried pleasure to come. On the most important part of any whisky, the tasting, it is an absolutely delicious peated, sherried dram in the mouth, if you enjoy a peated, sherried dram then grab a bottle of this while you can as it is fairly limited with only 2,500 bottles available but it is priced alongside the rest of the Meikle Tòir range so thumbs up to GlenAllachie for not trying to cash in with this one, as it is outstanding.

SMW Whisky Score 93/100
