Review of the
Meikle Tòir The Sherry One 5 Year Old,
quality sherry casks along with quality
peaty distillate at play here results in
a great balance between sherry, oak and
peat combined with the flavoursome
bottling strength of 48% ABV which all
make for a very pleasurable young
sherried, peaty dram.
Meikle
Tòir The Sherry One 5 Year Old is one of
four whiskies recently unveiled by
independent Scotch whisky distillery The
GlenAllachie under their new peated
Scotch single malt whisky brand Meikle
Tòir (pronounced mee-kuhl tor).
Mainland peat sourced from St. Fergus,
one mile inland, in the north-east
Highlands of Scotland is used to kiln
the barley in the production of The
Sherry One. It is produced with a long,
160 hour, fermentation process and has a
35 PPM spirit phenol content.
After initial aging in American oak
ex-Bourbon barrels, Meikle Tòir The
Sherry One has undergone additional
maturation in Pedro Ximénez and
Oloroso sherry puncheons, resulting in a
single malt which the distillery
describe as having an "impeccable balance
between dark fruits, mocha, treacle, and
puffs of earthy peat smoke."
Billy Walker Master Distiller commented
on The Sherry One saying: "The Pedro
Ximénez and Oloroso sherry puncheons
work in perfect harmony to offer
chocolate, dark fruit and coffee
characteristics. When combined with the
sweet smokiness of the mainland peat,
the flavours dance together beautifully,
creating a wonderful equilibrium of
sweet and peat."
Meikle Tòir The Sherry One 5 Year Old
has a RRP of £50 and will be available from
specialist online whisky shops such as

|
Bottled at 48% ABV, naturally
coloured and non-chill filtered.

Tasting Notes:
Nose: A
lovely gentle touch of smoke, vanilla
toffee, apricot jam, orange citrus, a
little heather honey and a light barley
sugar sweetness and the faintest note of
almonds lurking in the background
Taste: A
blend of earthy and sugary sweet peat smoke interlaced with
a touch of lemon and orange citrus,
treacle toffee, honey and a
some lovely vibrant oak spice.
Finish: Long,
treacle toffee'd sherried peat now has a
coffee edge slowly bows out to leave the
now slightly drying oak spice to have
the final say
Comment:
Yes it is young in places but it doesn't
try to hide it, in fact it is probably
what makes it so good.
Quality sherry casks along with quality
peaty distillate at play here results in
a great balance between sherry, oak and
peat combined with the flavoursome
bottling strength of 48% ABV which all
make for a very pleasurable young
sherried, peaty dram. If you enjoy the
young peated, sherried Islay drams, you
will love this.
