Review of the
new Meikle Tòir The Original 5 Year Old,
cracking young sugary sweet peated dram
with a good portion of oak spice that
could rival any of the Scottish Islands
peated drams for quality and peaty
pleasure.
Meikle
Tòir The Original 5 Year Old is one of
four whiskies recently unveiled by
independent Scotch whisky distillery The
GlenAllachie under their new peated
Scotch single malt whisky brand Meikle
Tòir (pronounced mee-kuhl tor).
Meikle Tòir
The Original 5 Year Old is said to be
their classic single malt that champions
their peated pursuit. Made with mainland
peat sourced from St. Fergus, one mile
inland, in the north-east Highlands of
Scotland, it was produced with a a 35
PPM spirit phenol content and the
flavour contribution is said to be
sweeter than that anticipated of coastal
peat.
Meikle Tòir
The Original 5 Year Old has been matured in
American first-fill Bourbon
barrels, virgin oak casks, and
Rye barrels, which the distillery says
imparts "waves of stem
ginger, sweet spice, and oak-smoked
sugar."
Lindsay Cormie The GlenAllachie
Warehouse Manager commented on The
Original saying: "The toast level of the
virgin oak casks will add a lovely layer
of vanilla and toffee flavours which,
when entwined with the spicy
contribution from the Rye casks, will
give the perfect balance of sweet
spiciness and peat smoke."
Meikle Tòir The Original 5 Year Old
is bottled at 50% ABV, it is naturally
coloured and non-chill filtered and has
a RRP of £50 and will be available from
specialist online whisky shops such as

Morrison's
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Sweet
peat smoke infused with mildly sweet
vanilla with a gentle honey and almond
edge.
Taste: Lovely
sugar sweet peat which the nose promised
leads and doesn't disappoint, it comes
honey infused, it is quickly joined by
some lovely vibrant oak spices, ginger,
white pepper and some late vanilla
toffee which eventually finds it way
through the peat.
Finish: The
finish is long, young oak spices and
sweet peat tussle it out to have the
final say with no overall winner except
the drinker.
Comment:
A cracking young sugary sweet peated
dram with a good portion of oak spice
that could rival any of the Scottish
Islands peated drams for quality and
peaty pleasure. There is a wee bit of a
youthfulness but a good peated dram is
often best served young.
