Whisky Focus - The Macallan Amber 1824 Series Review & Tasting Notes

The Macallan Amber 1824 Series Review

17th May  2013
The Macallan Amber 100% Sherry Cask Matured 100% Natural Colour 40% ABV

The Macallan Amber is the second entry in the new Macallan 1824 Series which is a series of single malt Scotch whiskies where each whisky takes its name from the colour of whisky. 100% matured in sherry casks and with no added colour  you can tell from just looking at this that it will be a richer fuller flavoured expression than the entry level Macallan Gold.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Colour: Deep Amber.

Nose: A delicate nose, slow to reveal its secrets at first. After a few deep inhalations it reveals some deliciously inviting butter tablet and almost concentrated sherried fruit.

Taste: All its secrets are revealed with a welcome burst of raisins, lemon zest and cinnamon followed by creamy vanilla reminding us of the oak it has spent years maturing in. Some ripe plum and toffee giving us a lovely balanced bitter sweetness.

Finish: Cocoa, vanilla, fudge. Mild and slightly drying slowly fading sherry oak.

Comment: This was shy at first on the nose but once I tasted it and nosed it again, I loved it. It may not carry an age statement but there is obviously a good potion of mature stuff in the mix. A classic quality sherried Macallan with a superb balance of vanilla and sherry. Loved it!

SMW Score 90/100

The Macallan Amber (RRP £45) is now available from The Whisky Exchange
