Review of Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice Speyburn 1991.
Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice Speyburn 1991 was matured in Refill Sherry Hogshead casks and bottled at 46% ABV.
The Gordon & MacPhail ‘Connoisseurs Choice’ range was launched in the mid-1960s’. Until this time, many of the whiskies the range featured would not have been available as single malt. Today, Connoisseurs Choice retains this exclusive nature with a range of rare and sought after single malts from distilleries throughout Scotland including this Speyburn 1991 Speyside single malt whisky.
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
A lovely barley sugar sweetness,
vanilla, touch of honey. A wee hint of
apple and lemon.
Taste:
A sweet barley and honeycomb delivery
then comes some glorious tongue
tingling fizzy spices and mouth coating
pepper. A nice touch of lemon in the
background. A little grassy.
Finish:
Long. The fizzy spices slowly recede leaving citrusy lemon, sweet barley and mildly drying oak.
Comment:
I didn't expect the glorious fizzy spices and pepper, no doubt a
contribution made by the casks used for
maturation. Not as sugar laden as the
Glenlivet Nadurra but reminds me of the Glenlivet it
in some ways. I have to say I very much
enjoyed this, a cracking Speysider and a
great example of what the wood can add
to a whisky.
