Review of Clan Denny Dumbarton 46 Year Old Single Grain Whisky by Murray Cohen.
This Clan Denny Dumbarton 46 Year Old Single Grain Whisky was distilled in 1964 then matured in a bourbon barrel, Cask No. HH 7253, for 46 years and then bottled by Douglas Laing under their Hunter Hamilton Clan Denny label at a strength of 47.3% ABV.
Murray Cohen's Tasting Notes:
Colour: Dark Amber.
Nose: The single grain effect is intense, absolutely present in spades and reveals layers of maturity in bourbon barrel. There is a minty honey with great emphasis on the beehive contribution. Magnificent olfactory impression. Vanilla and nutty nougat wrapped in lime peel enter the delicious fray. The dark caramel notes are amazing and only get better as the whisky opens.
Taste: Full-bodied. Super smooth and creamy. A voluptuous sweetness coats the lips then a growing and evolving high-powered oakiness and concentrated spice appear. The tannins explode in sheer delight. A burnt sugar denouement finishes the deal.
Finish: Long with a Danish pastry log soaked in heavy spirits evoking elements of dark rum, raisins and a rare earthiness with mature sweetness.
Comment: This single grain scotch is essentially and basically perfect from nose to palate to finish. The almost 50 years in barrel has only served to augment this dram and create character. This is a winner in every sense and deserves to be recognized.
