Review of Highland Park 23 Year Old Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask by Murray Cohen.

The Highland Park 23 Year Old Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask bottling was distilled in May 1984 and bottled at the standard Old Malt Cask strength of 50% ABV in 2007 before the Laing brothers, Fred and Stewart Laing split with the Old Malt Cask brand going to Stewart Laing and becoming part of the new Hunter Laing independent whisky company.

Murray Cohen's Tasting Notes:

Colour:  Light gold.

Nose:  Deep citrus-honey with nutty hues bond together with shades of various melons underscoring a honed fruity melange which gives this expression a rather unique presentation. Crème de menthe surfaces and then a hint of crème de cacao enters the stage. Fresh kiwi’s ring the bell. There is a perfumed chorus which melds with the cornucopia of fruity sweetness and lovely floral tones. Sugary meringue compliments with juicy dark plums.

Taste: Medium to full-bodied. Lovely creaminess and a sweet maltiness is underpinned with spice and buttermilk pancakes.

Finish: Long, the spice levels out somewhat allowing a nutty nougat and coffee cream to appear.

Comment: I’m a fan of Highland Park 30 Old Malt Cask. This 23 year old expression is a wonderful surprise coming at one from different angles creating a real masterpiece here.
