Review of Bunnahabhain 2008 9 Year Old Ṃine Bordeaux Red Wine Cask
Distell 2018 Malt Whisky Collection.
 The Bunnahabhain 2008 Ṃine Bordeaux Red
Wine Cask Matured has been bottled at
Cask Strength, 58.1% ABV, natural colour
and non-chillfiltered, it is a limited
release of 1068 bottles here in the UK.
Although the
original non-peated Islay malt,
Bunnahabhain has become well known for
its Ṃine, which means ‘peated’ in Scots
Gaelic.
This limited edition release is
the first Bunnahabhain release to
have been fully matured in red wine
casks from the Bordeaux region of
France. Distilled and filled into cask
in December 2008, Distell tells me that
"this ‘experiment’ has resulted in a
unique and stunning array of rich grape
and peppery smoke notes, which combine
to deliver a long and warming fruity
finish. A truly unique Bunnahabhain Ṃine".

Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
A lovely gentle slightly ashy touch of
sweet smoke mingles with the slightly
more dominant rich fruit. Just a touch
of vanilla toffee.
Taste:
The smoke which is more powerful than
the nose let on coats the palate, it has
a lovely peppery edge to it and is
infused with toasted raisin, cherry and
a little toffee. Some late tobacco and
liquorice.
Finish:
The delicious red wine infused smoke
lingers for age before bowing out,
leaving some mildly drying oak.
Comment:
Peated Bunnahabhain and wine casks can
make for a very good whisky and this is
a very good whisky and worthy of its
spot in the Distell Limited Release Malt
Collection 2018. The amount of smoke
delivered on the palate was a very
pleasant surprise which wasn't indicated
on the nose. I wonder just how good this
could have been with a few more years in
the cask but at 9 years old it is a very
enjoyable peated wine cask matured
Bunnahabhain.
