Bladnoch Vinaya Review

15th January 2024
Review of Bladnoch distillery's entry level core range bottling, Bladnoch Vinaya.

Bladnoch VinayaBladnoch Vinaya is one of three Bladnoch Classic Collection whiskies which I am reviewing in for Burns Night. Rabbie Burns, the national poet of Scotland, was born on 25 January 1759 in Alloway, Ayrshire, Scotland and spent his final years in Dumfries not far from Bladnoch distillery, if Burns was alive today I am sure given his love of Scotch whisky there is a good chance he may have celebrated his birthday with a a few drams from Bladnoch.

Bladnoch Vinaya is the distillery's entry level no age statement core range bottling, it has been matured in a unique combination of 1st fill Bourbon and 1st fill Sherry casks and has been bottled non-chill filtered, naturally coloured at 46.7% ABV.

‘Vinaya’, is a Sanskrit word meaning respect and gratitude, pays homage to the original founders of the distillery who paved the way, as Bladnoch looks forward to an exciting new era of production and innovation.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Gentle enticing honey and barley sugar sweetness, some equally gentle lime marmalade and a wee bit of a grassy floral edge.

Taste: The delicious gentle barley sugared candy sweetness the nose forecast leads the way infused with green apple, pear, zesty lemon, crushed sultana, honey and lovely vibrant peppery oak spices which are accompanied by the grassy notes from the nose.

Finish: Still a hint of green apple, crushed sultana and honey, the barley sugar sweetness puts up a short fight but is overthrown by the delicious peppery notes which give way to let the slightly drying oak have the final word.

Comment: A delicious Lowland dram which I have no doubt Rabbie Burns would have loved. For those that enjoy their Lowland drams grassy, barley sugared, honeyed and spiced and with some added apple and sultana notes. The balance of first fill sherry and bourbon casks appears firmly in the bourbon cask corner, but both casks have their say to make for a very enjoyable Lowland dram.

SMW Whisky Score 89/100
