Review of the
Method and Madness Single Grain whiskey.
One
of four initial bottlings in the new
Method and Madness Irish whiskey range
this
Method and Madness Single Grain Irish
whiskey is a style of whiskey
which has never really been available
commercially from the Midleton
distillery before now.
In line with the Method and Madness
theme this is no straight forward
American Bourbon cask matured single
grain whiskey, after maturing in
ex-Bourbon barrels to achieve a light,
perfumed flavour on the grain whiskey,
it was then uniquely finished for around
12 months in toasted, virgin Spanish
sherry oak casks from Galicia in North
West Spain.
It has been bottled as all whiskey
should be, non chill-filtered, natural
colour and at a very palatable strength
of 46% ABV.
The Method and Madness Single Grain whiskey will be available in the
UK, France and Ireland (including Irish
travel retail) from this month with an RRP of €49
You will also soon find it available from specialist online whisky retailers such as

Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
Soft sweet vanilla merges with light
buttery corn and a very gentle touch of
sherried fruit.
Taste:
A honey and vanilla sweetness is joined
by a mild spiced pear
fruitiness followed by some delicious
light sherried fruit notes.
Finish: Long. A lovely balance of
sugars and spices, the sugars fade first
leaving some lingering delicate mildly
drying sherry oak and a very light touch
of liquorice.
Comment:
Using a sherry cask for a delicate
spirit such as single grain whiskey can
be a mad thing to do as it can sometimes
overwhelm the grain character but on
this occasion the 12 month sherry cask
finish has added a lovely delicate
sherry dimension to the single grain
character. This has no age statement but
I would say it is a lovely mature single
grain which still has a vibrancy about
it. The finish is deliciously long and
long may this single grain whiskey be
part of the new Method and Madness
range.
It is great to finally see a single
grain whiskey from the folks at Midleton
and I am pleased to say it is a good
one, a delicious, high quality, sherry
finished Irish single grain whiskey with
a deliciously long finish.
