Meikle Tòir The Turbo 5 Year Old 2024 Edition

10th July 2024
The GlenAllachie has unveiled the second annual release of its peated single malt, Meikle Tòir The Turbo 2024 Edition, and if last years release, which was outstanding, is anything to go by this wont be around long.

Meikle Tòir The Turbo 5 Year Old 2024 EditionThe GlenAllachie Distillers Company has announced the release of the second instalment of the annual limited release of its peated single malt brand, Meikle Tòir: The Turbo 2024 Edition.

The first release was launched in September 2023 and if the first release is anything to go by I would say don't hang around if you fancy a bottle of the Meikle Tòir The Turbo 2024 Edition as the first release was an outstanding deliciously peaty sherried pleasure and I reckon the new release will sell quickly.

Those of you who may be unfamiliar with the Meikle Tòir brand, it is a peated single malt whisky brand created under the leadership of the GlenAllachie's veteran whisky maker Billy Walker, back in 2017 the distillery began annual peated productions of approximately six weeks.

The yearly output of peated new make spirit is around 100,000 Litres of Alcohol (LOA), representing roughly a tenth of the distillery’s total production and some of that production is now being bottled under the brand name Meikle Tòir and the new whisky has received numerous accolades since its launch, including 93 points for The Turbo 2023 Edition (IWSC, 2024). Judges praised it as a "delight of peach and fruity notes, balanced by a zesty finish."

The name, coined by Walker, reflects the intense smoke character achieved by capturing the spirit cut with the highest phenol level during distillation.

At bottling, the spirit’s phenolic content was an impressive 70 Parts per Million (PPM), balanced with "waves of toasted nuts, salted caramel, and dark chocolate truffles" after five years in rich casks.

To create Meikle Tòir, The GlenAllachie used mainland peat from St. Fergus, which is said to impart a sweeter smoke flavour compared to island peat. Additionally, the whisky underwent an extended fermentation period of 160 hours—a change implemented by Walker to develop a complex and flavourful distillate rich in esters.

All Meikle Tòir products proudly feature a five-year age statement, are free from added colouring, and are non-chill filtered.

The brand’s packaging, featuring a hand-drawn illustration by Scottish artist Iain McIntosh, is sourced exclusively from UK-based suppliers to reduce its carbon footprint.

Meikle Tòir’s core range includes three other products:
Meikle Tòir The Original 5 Year Old, Meikle Tòir The Sherry One 5 Year Old, and The Meikle Tòir The Chinquapin One 5 Year Old.

Remarking on the new release, Walker comments: "We have been thrilled at the reception of Meikle Tòir among the whisky community and beyond over the last ten months. For the team and I, it was essential to begin a peated campaign when we took over the reins at The GlenAllachie and use mainland peat to complement the spirit’s heather honey DNA.

"The Turbo, by its nature, is incredibly limited, but if you can get your hands on it, it’s an opportunity not to be missed. The 2024 Edition is a very moreish dram packed full of sweet campfire smoke alongside dried fruit and chocolate tones."

Meikle Tòir The Turbo 5 Year Old 2024 Edition is bottled at 50% ABV, it is
naturally coloured and non-chill filtered and has a RRP of £55.99 and will be available from specialist online whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt
