Review of the
new Highland Park 18 Year Old Viking
Pride Travel Edition.
The
Highland Park 18 Year Old Viking Pride
Travel Edition sits at the top of the
new Highland Park travel retail
exclusive range.
Matured primarily in sherry seasoned
European Oak casks, this is simply a
higher strength version of the
outstanding Highland Park 18 Year Old
available in the domestic market. The
special Highland Park 18 Travel Edition
has been bottled at its marrying
strength, 46% ABV and of course like
other Highland Park expressions it is
naturally coloured, taking it colour
only from the casks it matured in.
The Highland Park 18 Year Old Viking
Pride Travel Edition is presented
in a 70cl bottle and packaging which has
been inspired by the distillery's
Orcadian roots and Viking ancestry.
Rather attractively priced around £98
considering the lower strength domestic
market 18 year old expression is often
priced over £100.
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
A deliciously enticing mix of Highland
Parks aromatic ashy smoke and heather
honey, salty butter, toffee, cherries
and apricot.
Taste:
Deliciously rich. Honey infused with
orange, cherries, apricots and raisins,
some lovely dark chocolate coated
toffee, a little pepper and cinnamon and
of course HP smoke.
Finish:
A little citrus and smoke, honey fades to leave some lingering oak.
Comment:
Having been a frequent traveller now for
longer than I care to remember, around
10 years ago the Highland Park 18 year
old would have been my most regular
purchase from travel retail and I even
recall the price then at the airport
around £42 a bottle but sadly it
disappeared from the shelves at the
airports in favour of various short
lived creations from the Orkney
distillery so it is fantastic to see one
of the best and still affordable to
drink whiskies they produce back on the
shelves of the airport shops and with
the added bonus of being bottled at the
slightly higher strength of 46% ABV. It
is a pity they didn't take the
opportunity to bottle it in a 1 litre
bottle for travel retail but you cant
have everything and its simply good to
see it back on the shelves of the
airports.
I have known the Highland Park 18 to be
smokier over the years but as is the very nature of Scotch single
malt whiskies, no two batches of any
whisky is 100% identical but the
Highland Park 18 has managed to keep its
quality very high over the years and
this new travel retail expression is no
exception and at £98 at the airport it
is not only higher strength but also
cheaper than you will pay for the
standard expression in the domestic
market. It is still the classic must try
Highland Park expression. Certainly
worth picking up on your travels.

91/100
