Review of Glen Moray 2004 Chenin Blanc Single Cask No. 341

Glen Moray 2004 Chenin Blanc Cask 341The Glen Moray 2004 Chenin Blanc Single Cask No. 341 is one of three new single cask whiskies launched by the Speyside distillery in July this year.

Distilled in 2004 and fully matured in a ex-Chenin Blanc wine cask then bottled as it came from the cask, non-chill filtered, naturally coloured and at a cask strength of 60.3% ABV.

This single cask release is normally reserved exclusively for distillery visitors to purchase but due to the ongoing Covid-19 and travel restrictions in place the distillery has made all three of their Glen Moray 2020 Distillery Edition whiskies available to purchase via their Dial A Dram service, simply give them a call on +44 (01343) 550900 if you want to get hold of a bottle.

Priced at £85.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Sour pear drops and cooking apple which needs some sweetening, rather floral, a little oak and nuttiness hiding in the background.

Taste: The apple and pear from the nose has picked up some sweetness from the oak, some zesty orange, it is joined by some milk chocolate covered puff candy and a late sour and savoury edge.

Finish: Longish, the fruit bows out quickly leaving a bitter floral and slightly oak spicy edge.

Comment: On the nose it doesn't appear to be one for the sweet toothed but it sweetens up in the mouth but bitters out again on the finish. I doubt this is a wine cask finish which will make the core range, it is certainly interesting to try at this age and cask strength but I doubt it would ever be offered at a much younger or lower strength but great to see Glen Moray try different types of maturation and sharing it with whisky enthusiasts but after all these years and at this price I want my whisky to score higher than this, interesting though.

SMW Score 80/100
