Tomatin distillery was established by the Tomatin
Spey District Distillery Co Ltd. The
distillery struggled in the beginning
and was liquidated in 1906. In 1909, the
distillery was reopened by the New Tomatin
Distillers Co Ltd. Like other
distilleries it was closed during both
World Wars due to the shortage of
barley. Between 1956 and 1974 the number
of stills at Tomatin was increased from
only 2 to 23, making Tomatin the largest
distillery in Scotland. Despite this the
distillery was bankrupted again in 1986,
but it was taken over by its present
owners Takara the same year.
Today, only half of Tomatins massive
production capacity is used and the
majority of the whisky that is produced is
used in the Tomatin blend in Big T.
