Samuel Gelston's Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey Review

9th February 2022
Review of Samuel Gelston's Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey, a new young single pot still whiskey which is priced way below the long established pot still whiskey currently available.

Samuel Gelston's Single Pot Still Irish WhiskeyFollowing on from my review of Samuel Gelston's Blended Irish Whiskey I have moved up the range to the very keenly priced Samuel Gelston's Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.

The resurrected Samuel Gelston's Irish whiskey brand is a Belfast based whiskey brand, there is no Samuel Gelston distillery although this may change in the future, for now Samuel Gleston's whiskeys are sourced from the Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk Co. Louth, Ireland.

The whiskey in Samuel Gelston's Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey would have been sourced from the Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk Co. Louth, Ireland, which itself only went into production in 2015 which gives a clue to the maximum possible age of this pot still whiskey.

This was distilled with a mash bill of 50% Malted Barley & 50% Unmalted Barley then matured in ex-bourbon Casks before being bottle at 40% ABV.

You will find Samuel Gelston's Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey as well as the rest of Samuel Gelston's whiskey range available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, Amazon and Master of Malt

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Some coconut ice and a little sweet vanilla fudge infused with a gentle, slightly candied, lemon citrus. A wee touch of fresh oak and pot still spice lurks in the background.

Taste: A little youthful spiritiness. A delicate bitter sweetness, honey, lemon and a wee touch of orange citrus, coconut oil, all with a wee spicy, nutty, oaky edge.

Finish: Still a little youthful spiritiness, the honey, lemon citrus and coconut bows out quickly leaving some lovely gentle oak and pot still spice lingering for a little longer before bittering out.

Comment: A lovely gentle nose, in the mouth this has a wee touch of young spiritiness about it which wasn't announced by the nose, a young pot still whiskey for sure but still an easy drinking enjoyable bourbon cask matured dram with a nice wee touch of pot still spice and bourbon cask influence.

I picked my bottle up on offer in Amazon for £22 and for its price I cant complain at all, I didn't expect a 12 year old. It is great to see some new Irish single pot still whiskey's entering the Irish Single Pot Still marketplace, this expression wont be taking any awards off of the likes of the Redbreast 12 anytime soon but at around half the price of the Redbreast 12 it is still a great very drammable whiskey.

SMW Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey Score 83/100
