Review of the
Old Pulteney 16 Year Old travel retail
exclusive single malt whisky.
The
Old Pulteney 16 Year Old sits at the top
of the Wick distillery's new look travel retail exclusive
range.
Initially matured in American oak
ex-bourbon barrels and then further
matured in Spanish oak casks that have
been seasoned with Oloroso sherry.
The Old Pulteney 16 Year Old is bottled
at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and
naturally
coloured, it is presented in a 70cl bottle
and has a RRP of £80.
It may be worth
noting that this
will only be available in travel retail
outlets where the two other travel
retail exclusive whiskies, the 10 Year
Old and 2006 Vintage, are offered.
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
Barley sugared honey and some gentle
vanilla, spiced green apple and lemon
citrus, some distant raisin and a lovely
sea salty breeze.
Taste:
Deliciously sweet, rich and spicy with
Demerara sugar sweetened spiced raisins,
a touch of apricot and just the slightest salty liquorice tinge.
Some late toffee and a lovely mouth
coating peppery oak spice.
Finish:
A long finish with some creamy raisiny
toffee and some sweet peppery spice.
Comment:
Did I say delicious already? I actually
sat down to review this a couple of
nights ago and this is now my third
consecutive night dramming this which is
a very good indication of how highly I
rate it, to put it simply this is a
outstanding expression from the
distillery up in Wick on Scotland's
north coast. Its barley sugared, honeyed
notes with a coastal tinge let you know
that this is a without a doubt an Old
Pulteney whisky from start to finish and
the Oloroso sherry cask finish simply
adds a delightful fruity edge to the
whisky.
Given its price tag of £80 for a travel
retail exclusive whisky I am guessing
the folks up in Wick know that they have
something special here to have set the
price at this level. My only negative is
they chose to bottle it in a 70cl bottle
which means the pleasure doesn't last as
long if it had been a 1 litre bottle
which is fine for frequent travellers
but those who are not lucky enough to
pass through the airports as often and
have access to the travel retail
offerings a 70cl bottle is not what you
want to find at the airport which I know
has a major influence on the travel
retail whisky buyer which the majority
of which wont be frequent flyers, so
take note whisky companies bottle the
travel retail exclusive bottlings in 1
litre bottles and if dare I say it
increase the price if you have to.
SMW Score
94/100
If you have no travel plans in the
near future you can still find the
Old Pulteney domestic
core range of whiskies
which was updated last year and some now
discontinued Old Pulteney favourites
such as the 17 year old available from specialist online whisky
retailers such as
The Whisky Exchange,
The Whisky Shop and
