Mortlach distillery was founded in 1823 by James Findlater and his two partners Donald McIntosh and Alexander Gordon. It and was the first of Dufftown's seven whisky distilleries, the second was Glenfiddich, which was founded by William Grant who had been production manager at Mortlach. In 1852 the distillery was reopened by John Gordon after a few silent years, then in 1854 Gordon took on George Cowie as a partner, creating John Gordon & Co. Cowie became the sole owner when John Gordon died in 1867. The stills were doubled from 3 to 6 in 1897. In 1923 the Cowie family sold the distillery to John Walker & Sons.

In 1964 the distillery was completely rebuilt, but the old stills were used. They ceased using the malting floors in 1968, and the production was computerised in the late 1990's. Today John Walker & Sons has been integrated into United Distillers & Vintners and Mortlach is still an important component of the Johnnie Walker blends.

Mortlach makes an excellent after dinner malt and if you are a Macallan fan the excellent Mortlach Flora & Fauna bottling is definitely one for you to try.
