Review of the Jura 21 Year Old Tide

Jura 21 Year Old TideJura 21 Year Old Tide is one of a pair of 21 year old single malt whiskies from the island distillery which was added to the Jura whisky range back in May 2019.

The Jura 21 Year Old Tide was launched in the domestic market where its sibling, the Jura 21 Year Old Time, was released at the same time exclusively in Travel Retail, but it is the domestic market Jura 21 Tide which I am focusing on here.

Jura Tide is matured for 21 years in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels, a good choice of maturation partner for the light, citrus and grassy new make spirit which they distil at Jura. It is then enhanced with a finish in virgin oak casks. The result, Jura says, is a sweet, fruity and nutty flavour.

Bottled at 46.7% ABV and presented in a quality, superior presentation box featuring metallised inserts and a unique sandblasted frosted glass looking bottle, which is said to mimic the effect that the sea has on glass.

Jura 21 Year Old Tide is now priced around £135 and you will find it available along with the rest of the current Jura whisky range from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt

Jura 21 Year Old Tide Review

Bottled at 46.7% ABV.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Some lovely gentle sweet caramel and vanilla, coconut ice sweets, some almond, a little lemon citrus fruit and just the very slightest wisp of distant peat smoke.

Taste: Vanilla and treacle toffee with a honey and sugared almond oil edge, a wee bit of ginger adds a touch of spice, some late oak and again just a wisp of smoke hiding in the background.

Finish: A lovely long finish where the slightly drying gentle oak slowly edges out Turkish delight and caramel notes.

Comment: Jura really does come good with age, it is no surprise this is a little bourbon like given the casks used to mature it, some lovely sugars, caramel and almond which becomes more Turkish delight on the finish. Although this is the non peated 21 year old you can still detect a slight wisp of smoke throughout.

SMW Score 90/100
