Jameson 18 Year Old Review

30th August 2022
Deconstruction and review of the recently released new Jameson 18 Year Old 46% ABV non chill-filtered bottling.

Jameson 18 Year Old now bottled at 46% ABV and presented in new sustainable packaging. As well as recently giving the Jameson 18 Year Old a new look with new packaging which aligns to Irish Distillers’ sustainability commitments by focusing on minimising waste Irish Distillers also tweaked the whiskey you will find in the bottle.

I am pleased to say that Jameson 18 Year Old is now bottled at the higher strength of 46% ABV, up from 40% ABV, removing the need for chill filtration which should do, and does, boost the flavour of the whiskey.

On my recent visit to Midleton Distillery down in Cork, Ireland, I was lucky enough to enjoy a tasting of the new Jameson 18 Year Old presented by Master Distiller Kevin O’Gorman where Kevin deconstructed the new whiskey presenting me with samples of the main contributing component whisky's which go into making up the 18 year old.

First up I had the pleasure of a 20 Year Old single grain whiskey, from a single 1st fill bourbon cask No. 39508 filled on 13 May 2002. I tasted this at cask strength, 57.3% ABV. No surprises a lovely mature bourbon cask matured grain whiskey with notes of creamy caramel, honey, coconut, fruit and oak spice.

The 2nd component whiskey was a 19 Year Old single pot still whiskey from a single 1st fill bourbon cask No. 20074 filled on 5 May 2003. I tasted this at cask strength, 53% ABV. Standing out with this one was notes of creamy vanilla, apple, pot still spice and sweet toasted oak.

The third and final component sample I tasted was a 18 Year Old single pot still whiskey from a 2nd fill Oloroso sherry butt, cask No. 59932 filled on 11 September 2003. No surprises here either, a mix of gentle pot still and sherry oak spices, sherry, dried fruit, nutty, a mature, lightly sherried Christmas cake sums it up.

So what are they all like when blended with some other similar casks to create the new Jameson 18 Year Old 46% ABV non chill-filtered expression, you can read my opinion below.

Review of the new Jameson 18 Year Old 46% ABV non chill-filtered bottling.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Creamy vanilla toffee infused with gentle pot still spice and oak, distant orange marmalade.

Taste: The delicious and gentle creamy vanilla toffee from the nose has had a wee sugar boost and has the very slightest orange and lemon candied edge, this is interlaced with gentle sweet pot still and oak spices, it is joined by some delicate sherried fruit - raisin and sultana, a little nuttiness and a touch of vanilla and coconut. Then another gentle wave of late spice.

Finish: Sweet toffee, gentle fruit, pot still and oak spices linger long into the finish.

Comment: A delicious mature Jameson blend where the pleasure factor has no doubt been boosted by the increase in strength.

SMW Irish Blended Whisky Score 92/100
