The Glentauchers Distillery was established in 1898 by the Glentauchers Distillery Company which was a joint venture between James Buchanan, of the Buchanan blends and WP Lowrie, a Glasgow stockholder who had supplied Buchanan from the beginning. In 1925 James Buchanan & Company became part of the DCL group. With exception to the war-time years the distillery operated continuously, until 1985 when it was mothballed by UDV who had taken control of DCL.

In 1989 UDV sold it to Allied Distillers who had the distillery back in production in less than a year. Glentauchers is now a key component in Blends Scotch such as Black & White, Ballantines and Teachers Highland Cream. Almost 100% of the Glentauchers malt produced goes into blends, but you can still find some single malt bottlings from independents such as Gordon & MacPhail. There has also been an original bottling limited release of a Glentauchers 15 Year Old Single malt.
