The Gladstone Axe The Black Axe Review

21st June 2021
Review of The Gladstone The Black Axe Scotch Blended Malt whisky.

The Gladstone Axe The Black AxeThe Gladstone Axe is a new whisky brand from New York, USA based fine wine and spirits company, Biggar and Leith, which recently launched with two new Scotch blended malt whiskies.

The whisky brand was named in honour of four-times UK Prime Minister William Gladstone who was Prime Minister during the reign of Queen Victoria, they were created by his great-great-great Grandson, Elwyn Gladstone, Founder of Biggar and Leith.

Prime Minister William Gladstone had a legendary collection of axes and a passion for felling trees as a way of relaxing and exercising and people would come from around the country to watch him chopping trees.

Just like The Gladstone Axe American Oak expression The Gladstone Axe The Black Axe is a blend of 14 Highland and Islay single malt whiskies, but with the Black Axe having a bigger portion of the peaty Islay whiskies in the vatting, it was aged and finished in American Oak Bourbon barrels.

The Gladstone Axe The Black Axe  has been bottled at 41% ABV and is presented in a premium smoky grey glass decanter style bottle with a wax seal and a handy thumb print dimple in the side of the dumpy bottle to keep a good grip of the bottle when pouring a dram.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Gentle spiced oak, a little barley sugared sweetness, some apple and pear, vanilla and a lovely very subtle distant peat smoke.

Taste: Barley sugared vanilla toffee with a lovely gentle sweet peaty edge, some sweet oak spice

Finish: Sugar sweet toasted oak and spice clings to the mouth for an age before bowing out to leave a lingering wisp of peat smoke. A little drying at the end.

Comment: A gentle nose but it wins you over on the palate and finish, the American Oak is a good blended malt but the wee bit extra peat from the contributing Islay malts in the vatting for The Black Axe adds a little bit more pleasure and makes it stand out for me. A great dram for its price, a higher ABV could had made this very good indeed but you can say that about most whiskies.

SMW Blended Malt Whisky Score 86/100
