The Craigellachie distillery
was established in 1888 by Peter J.Mackie.
Set in the village of Craigellachie at
the meeting point of those two great
rivers of whisky lore, the Fiddich and
the Spey. The location where the distillery was
built was only partially because of the
quality of the water there, the main
reason was the proximity of the railway.
Mackie's company Macky & Co was absorbed by D.C.L
(later to become UDV) in 1924. Electricity was installed in the
distillery in 1948. The distillery was
practically rebuilt in a very modern
style in the 1960's. The
number of stills was doubled during
this rebuilding. The
distillery became property of its
current owner, together with 4 others.
Only 2% of the production is sold as
single malt, the remaining malt is used in blends,
mainly Dewar's
White Label. You will find that it is mainly independent
bottlings which are available to buy, but you
can find some official bottlings at
specialist whisky shops such as
The Whisky Exchange.
