Whisky Focus - Bowmore Spring Tide

Bowmore Springtide Review

9th February 2012

Bowmore Spring Tide is Bowmore's new premium entry into their travel retail range, it takes its name from the high tide of spring, when the earth, sun and moon are all aligned.

Predominantly matured in first-fill Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, this beautifully rich expression is packaged in a super premium gift pack. It doesn't carry an age statement but age is not always a sign of quality and and in this instance having tasted it I can say age is not significant here as this is a quality whisky.

Non-chill-filtered and bottled at cask strength the Bowmore Spring Tide has an RRP of £120 and it is aimed at both the gift market the whisky enthusiast.

Bowmore Spring Tide Tasting Notes

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose:  An inviting nose, intriguingly rich. Dark chocolate, orange and coffee aromas. A slight whiff of smoke.

Taste: A delicious full bodied rich sweetness. Orange, raisins, toffee, light smoke, oak.

Finish: A long finish, dried fruit, toffee, burnt toast, light smoky slowly drying oak.

Comment: As Bowmore enters a new era with its brand new packaging for its entire domestic and travel retail range does this whisky mark a new era for Bowmore whisky itself.

This is a very different style Bowmore but in a very good way, absolutely delicious. Very, very light smoke and deliciously rich. Hopefully this doesn’t remain exclusive to travel retail for ever; you shouldn’t need a passport to buy whisky this good. In the meantime look out for this one on your travels if you want to spoil yourself. Excellent, loved it!

Just a thought, has Bowmore's new recruit, Master Blender Rachel Barrie had a hand in this, surely she hasn't been there long enough to have an influence yet but if she has I will certainly look forward to what she has to offer the domestic core range in the future. The future is certainly looking good at Bowmore.

SMW Score 90/100
