Balmenach distillery was built by James McGregor
who was the great grandfather of Sir Robert Bruce Lochart,
author of the 1951 book "Scotch".
According to the book, the area of the
Highlands where Balmenach distillery is
located was notorious for illicit
distilling. Balmenach was one of the
first distilleries in the Highlands to
become legitimate after the Licensing
Act of 1823. After having many different
owners through the years the distillery was closed
in 1993 but was then reopened in 1997 by
Inver House Distillers. Inver House
Distillers have not yet released any
single malt bottlings for general sale
yet, but are expected to release
one in about 2010. However, a limited
number of bottles of Balmenach 27 Year
Old and 28 Year Old have been produced
for their Highland Selection - a range of Limited Edition Single Malt Whiskies from each of the
Inver House’s 5 distilleries. But these
are very hard to get a hold of.
