Review of the
anCnoc 12 year old
As
a warm up to me tasting the new
anCnoc Peatheart Batch 3 and
anCnoc Sherry Cask Finish Peated Edition
Review I revisited the anCnoc 12 year old,
the stalwart in the anCnoc whisky core
range.
The
anCnoc core whisky range has offered us
whisky drinkers various expressions over the
years but the one constant in recent times
has been the entry level anCnoc 12 year
old since it was reintroduced back in
2003 following a period where the
distillery was closed between 1983 and
1988.
The anCnoc 12 Year Old is matured in a combination of second fill
American oak, ex-bourbon and in lesser
numbers ex-sherry casks and bottled at
40% ABV.
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
An enticing balance of lemon, honey and
apple cider. A touch of butterscotch
vanilla and a lovely gentle mild barley
sugared sweetness.
Taste:
Lovely lemon infused mild barley sugars
with a gentle honey and oak spiced edge coats
the mouth, some distant vanilla and
coconut ice.
Finish:
A deliciously malty, longish finish with
caramel, honey, a touch of coconut and
more lovely gentle and slightly drying
oak spice.
Comment:
This really is still one of the best, most complex and
consistently good entry level malt
whiskies around which probably doesn't
get as much press as it deserves. I
could say this about a lot of whiskies
but I would bet this would be absolutely
stunning if bottled at 46 -50% ABV, it
is still a cracker at 40%.
SMW Score
90/100
