Whisky Focus - anCnoc Sherry Cask Finish Peated Edition Review

anCnoc Sherry Cask Finish Peated Edition Review

22nd September 2023
Review of the new peaty permanent addition to the anCnoc core range, anCnoc Sherry Cask Peated Edition.

anCnoc Sherry Cask Finish Peated EditionI know that there is a lot of whisky enthusiasts, myself included, that love a sherried peaty dram so I am sure there are a lot of you who are pleased to hear that Knockdhu distillery (anCnoc whisky) has released a permanent new non-aged expression peaty dram with a sherry influence, the anCnoc Sherry Cask Finish Peated Edition.

The distillery describe this new addition to the core range as bursting with anCnoc’s soft, sweet, fruity flavours and the delicious vanilla and warm spice of a sherry finish – but with the added richness of subtle, lingering campfire smoke.

The whisky is crafted using a combination of Knockdhu’s peated and non-peated spirit, and after an initial maturation period in American oak casks, it’s finished in sherry butts from Jerez which hone the whisky’s character - as smoky spirit mingles with sweet spicy wood.

anCnoc released its first peated sherry expression in 2020, exclusively for the Swedish market. Its popularity amongst whisky drinkers, particularly those looking to explore peated whiskies for the first time, prompted the decision to craft an expression for anCnoc’s other key global markets.

Bottled at 46% ABV.

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A little shy at first but dig deep and you are rewarded with some toffee infused with some very subtle peat smoke, hints of lemon, plum, ginger and sweet raisins.

Taste: Rich toffee infused with the plum and raisin from the nose, a touch of vanilla and all infused with a delicious peat smoke a bit of a spicy edge.

Finish: Long, oak, sweet peat smoke, toffee and now a touch of coffee with a wee bit of a sherried edge lingers for an age before bowing out.

Comment: As I said a shy nose but delicious in the mouth and finish, the balance of anCnoc DNA, peat smoke and sherry  make for a very pleasurable dram.

SMW Whisky Score 88/100
