Samuel Gelston’s Irish Whiskey
continues to celebrate the ‘gold fever’
of its historic founder with the
unveiling today of a spectacular one-off
'Golden Bottle' of Samuel Gelston's
Blended Irish Whiskey which one lucky
whiskey enthusiast can win this festive
season.
When I say 'Golden Bottle' I mean a
bespoke bottle which has been specially
handcrafted by wild gold expert and
jewellery maker Mark Bell, the unique
one-off bottle has been gilded with a
version of Gelston’s unique star logo
made from pure Irish river gold and
engraved to pay homage to the whiskey’s
unique heritage.
Established in Belfast in the 1830s,
Samuel Gelston’s was purchased by daring
young Irishman Harry Neill in 1869 who
made his fortune in Australia’s famous
1851 Gold Rush. Upon returning to
Belfast, Harry used his new-found wealth
to build the Gelston’s business and
export his own ‘liquid gold’ for the
world to enjoy.
Having celebrated this history with a
special gold panning event and ‘gold
rush’ cocktail campaign earlier this
year, Samuel Gelston’s have now
commissioned Mark, the Co-Founder of
ethical jewellers Jacqueline & Edward,
to embellish Samuel Gelston’s signature
star on a bottle of their blended Irish
whiskey.
The finished piece weighs approximately
8g and is half pure Irish river gold
from County Down and County Antrim, and
half 18ct yellow gold alloy, made from
purely recycled materials. Mark explains
"When I heard that a fantastic whiskey
brand wanted to do a collaboration, the
whiskey lover in me was over the moon.
Simplicity seemed like the key with
regards to the design, so we re-created
their signature logo.... but in solid
gold.
"Having now sampled some of their
whiskey thanks to Samuel Gelston's
generosity, I can say with my hand on my
heart that it is a fine tipple and I'm
proud to be part of their journey."

Nose:
A lovely gentle nose with a little lemon
citrus, mild coconut sweetness and a
touch of creamy vanilla.
Taste:
New make spirit and vanilla lead, icing
sugar sweetness, a
touch of the slightly candied lemon
citrus and the coconut from the nose,
some gentle spice perks things up a
little.
Finish:
Fades quickly leaving a touch of
lingering citrus and spice
Comment: A young, fresh, clean,
very gentle Irish blend, I cant fault it
for a young whiskey. It is a pleasant
enough dram, starts well on the nose,
despite the new make notes on the palate
it is a very easy drinking young
whiskey.

Nose:
Some honey and vanilla, a wee touch of
spice and a wee bit spirity, a touch of
citrus lurking in the background.
Taste:
Some youthful new make spiritiness.
A little oiled maltiness, honey, spiced
caramel and a little late orange zest.
Finish:
The gentle honey has stayed the
distance, slightly drying oak spice
peaks before bowing out in a slightly
bittering end..
Comment: Certainly a young malt whiskey with a bit of a
personality of new make spirit, the
honey and oak spice still make it an
enjoyable dram and it wont break the
bank.

Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
Some coconut ice and a little sweet
vanilla fudge infused with a gentle,
slightly candied, lemon citrus. A wee
touch of fresh oak and pot still spice
lurks in the background.
Taste:
A little youthful spiritiness. A
delicate bitter sweetness, honey, lemon
and a wee touch of orange citrus, coconut
oil, all with a wee spicy,
nutty, oaky edge.
Finish:
Still a little youthful spiritiness, the
honey, lemon citrus and coconut bows out
quickly leaving some lovely gentle oak
and pot still spice lingering for a
little longer before bittering out.
Comment: A lovely gentle nose, in the mouth this has a
wee touch of young spiritiness about it
which wasn't announced by the nose, a
young pot still whiskey for sure but
still an easy drinking enjoyable bourbon
cask matured dram with a nice wee touch
of pot still spice and bourbon cask
influence.

Samuel Gelston's Irish Cream Liqueur Review

I recently had the pleasure of
tasting this at a tasting lead by Johnny
Neill, great, great grandson of Harry
Neill who purchased the Belfast based
Irish whiskey brand in 1869 .
I don't normally review liqueurs but
there are some delicious whisky
liqueurs' out there today and this is
another one and it is very reasonably
priced, it is available from
Amazon
and Tesco stores in Northern Ireland.

Taste:
A deliciously sweet exceptionally smooth
Irish whiskey infused with a mix of
sweetened double cream, milk chocolate,
butterscotch, vanilla and icing sugared
coconut.
Comment:
A deliciously sweet, moreish, creamy,
chocolate infused whiskey liqueur,
perhaps not something you would reach
for everyday but something different to
stick in the cabinet for when the mood
takes you for something sweet and
indulgent.
