Tomatin Sherry & Port Cask Whiskies: Elegant Father’s Day gift Ideas from the Highlands.

Tomatin 12 Year Old Sherry Cask and the Tomatin 14 Year Old Port Cask

Father's Day is the perfect opportunity to treat the whisky-loving dad in your life to something a little more special than usual, and few gifts strike the balance between thoughtfulness, craftsmanship and indulgence quite like a well-chosen bottle of single malt Scotch whisky. It's often said that Scotch whisky is an affordable taste of luxury, and when chosen well, it can feel every bit as personal as it is premium.

Each year, as Father's Day approaches, the same question comes up: what makes the ideal whisky gift? The answer is rarely about chasing the rarest bottle or the highest price tag. Instead, it's about finding something with character — a whisky that feels considered, offers a sense of discovery, and perhaps introduces your dad to a style he might not normally reach for.

That's where Tomatin makes a particularly strong case. Nestled in the Scottish Highlands, the distillery has long been known for its soft, approachable spirit and its thoughtful use of cask maturation. In recent years, Tomatin has expanded its core range with a greater focus on expressive wood finishes and full maturations, showcasing just how versatile Highland single malt can be.

Two expressions in particular stand out as excellent Father's Day gift options: the Tomatin 12 Year Old Sherry Cask and the Tomatin 14 Year Old Port Cask.

The Tomatin 12 Year Old Sherry Cask is a relatively recent addition to the core range, and a bold evolution of the distillery's traditional 12-year-old style. Unlike the standard expression, which balances bourbon and sherry cask maturation, this release is fully matured in sherry wood for 12 years, predominantly in a combination of first-fill and second-fill casks. The result is a richer, more focused interpretation of Tomatin's signature character, with the sherry influence dialled up to deliver a more indulgent, dessert-like profile. Bottled at 40% ABV, it aims to capture the depth and warmth that sherry maturation brings, while maintaining the distillery's hallmark smoothness and easy drinkability. At £52 RRP, it offers an accessible entry into fully sherried Highland whisky and makes a thoughtful gift for those who enjoy rich, fruit-led single malts.

Alongside it, the Tomatin 14 Year Old Port Cask offers a very different but equally compelling experience. Part of the distillery's core range since 2014, this expression begins its life in American bourbon barrels before being finished for around a year in Tawny Port pipes. It was Tomatin's first-ever port wood finish, and it remains one of the most successful examples of how well the distillery spirit responds to fortified wine cask influence. The result is a rich yet beautifully balanced whisky layered with notes of apricot, plum jam, orange peel, ripe raisins and soft cherry, all wrapped in honeyed sweetness and gentle toffee. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and naturally coloured, it has both depth and vibrancy, with a long, fruit-salad-like finish that lingers elegantly. Priced around £77.50, it sits in a more premium gifting bracket, but delivers a level of complexity and polish that makes it particularly well suited to a special occasion.

Taken together, these two Tomatin expressions highlight exactly what makes the distillery such a strong Father's Day recommendation. One offers rich, full sherry cask indulgence; the other brings bright, fruit-driven port cask elegance. Both showcase the Highland distillery's ability to balance tradition with innovation, creating whiskies that feel accessible yet distinctive, familiar yet rewarding.

Whether your dad prefers the deep warmth of sherry influence or the lifted fruitiness of port cask maturation, Tomatin offers two excellent ways to mark the occasion — and proof that a thoughtful bottle of whisky remains one of the most reliable Father's Day gifts of all.

Tomatin 12 Year Old Sherry Cask Review

Bottled at 40% ABV.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Butterscotch infused with lovely enticingly rich sherried fruit, apple and ripe pear, a touch of orange, sweet sultanas and dark cherries.

Taste: A deliciously smooth sweet sherried fruit delivery, raisins and sultanas with a honeyed edge is closely followed by some slightly zesty orange. A gentle sweet vanilla sweetness peaks through from behind the fruit and just the slightest wee touch of cloves hiding there also, nutmeg and then a late gentle touch of cinnamon and dry ginger and a light dusting of pepper.

Finish: A longish length finish were the fruit tussles with a little peppery spice and mildly drying oak for a while before bowing out.

Comment: For a 40% ABV dram it is packed full of delicious sherried fruit flavour, there are some quality sherry casks at play here. A very welcome addition to the Tomatin range that wont disappoint if you enjoy a sherried dram.

Tomatin 14 Year Old Port Cask Review

Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and naturally coloured.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A lovely enticing, slightly candied sweet, fruity, rich perfumed nose, with butterscotch toffee, sweet honey, sugared plum, peach, a little orange blossom and cherry.

Taste: Honeyed butterscotch toffee infused with a deliciously juicy sweet fruity mix of apricot and plum jam, orange, ripe raisins and a little cherry, a lovely vibrant oak spiciness and a late nuttiness and a touch of ginger.

Finish: A delicious sweet lingering fruity finish echoing the taste slowly fades to leave a gentle mildly drying, mildly nutty, slightly peppery oak spiciness.

Comment: You will be hard pushed to find a more delicious example of a Port Cask finish than this Highlander. A deliciously moreish example of a Port cask finish is how I would best describe this and its 14 years of maturity simply adds to the smooth fruity, honeyed, toffee'd taste pleasure. If you have a whisky lover in your life, I am sure they will love you even more if you surprise them with a bottle Tomatin 14 Year Old Port Cask.
