Tomatin marks
the Year of the Horse 2026 with a rare
2011 Single Cask #37607 release. You
don't see many global single cask
releases from Tomatin so grab it while
you can.
Highland distillery Tomatin has unveiled
a limited single cask
whisky to celebrate the 2026 Lunar New
Year, ushering in the Year of the Horse
– a symbol of strength, vitality and
adventure in the Chinese Zodiac.
Tomatin Year of the Horse 2026 is a 2011
vintage single cask release, matured in
a first fill Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry
butt, Cask No. 37607. The cask, known as a ‘bota gorda’,
is larger than a traditional sherry butt
and was sourced directly from a bodega
in Jerez, southern Spain. Tomatin tells
me that its previous
role in a sherry solera has imparted
rich depth and intense PX character,
while the increased size of the cask has
allowed the elegant nuances of Tomatin’s
spirit to remain clearly expressed.
Bottled without chill filtration and
with natural colour, Tomatin Year of the
Horse 2026 is presented in the
distillery’s signature bottle, adorned
with intricate artwork on a red label.
The colour red is traditionally
associated with good fortune, positivity
and energy during Lunar New Year
celebrations.
Jamie Muir, distillery manager at
Tomatin, said: "We don’t often release
single cask whiskies to the global
market, however this sweet, fruity and
structured Tomatin single malt seemed
the perfect way to toast the Lunar New
Year.
"As well as being renowned as the home
of sherry, Jerez is also famed for its
horses and is the birthplace of the
legendary Carthusian breed which dates
back to the 15th century, the era in
which Tomatin is rooted. This rich
heritage makes this whisky a fitting
tribute to the strength, elegance and
spirit of the Year of the Horse."
Tomatin tells me that on the nose, the whisky opens with
vibrant notes of orange zest and dried
cranberries, followed by sweeter aromas
of honeycomb and candy floss. Layers of
cinnamon, tiramisu, mulled wine and
jalapeño emerge, offering something new
with each encounter. The palate delivers
flavours of candied almonds, toffee
apples, sultanas and salted liquorice,
leading into a long, rounded finish with
lingering baking spices.
Lunar New Year is a time to honour
shared traditions and community, values
that reflect Tomatin's 'To What Matters'
ethos, which centres on cherishing
meaningful moments and lasting
connections.
With a heritage that stretches back to
the 15th century, Tomatin has been home
to generations of skilled craftspeople
since its establishment in 1897. Today,
more than half of the distillery’s team
still live on site with their families,
and Tomatin remains one of the few
Scotch whisky distilleries to operate
its own cooperage.
Bottled at a natural strength of 56.5%
ABV, Tomatin Year of the Horse 2026 is
priced at £95 per 70cl bottle. Just 817
individually numbered bottles are
