Tomatin 12 Year Old Sherry Cask Review

30th May 2024
Tomatin has added a 12 Year Old 100% Sherry Cask matured single malt whisky to its core range.

Tomatin 12 Year Old Sherry Cask

Highland distillery Tomatin today announced a new addition to its core range, the Tomatin 12 Year Old Sherry Cask.

The Tomatin 12 Year Old Sherry Cask builds on the sherry profile that you find in Tomatin's classic 12 Year Old which is a combination of bourbon and sherry cask matured whisky, the new 12 Year Old Sherry Cask has been fully matured in Sherry Casks for 12 years, the distillery tells me 75% First Fill sherry casks and 25% 2nd fill sherry butts.

According to the distillery, the result of this 100% Sherry Cask maturation is a remarkable dram that epitomises the exceptional craftsmanship, tradition, and quality of Highland malt, combining decadent, rich flavours imparted by the sherry casks.

This latest release features a striking new design, encased in a vivid scarlet exterior embossed with opulent gold foil accents, paying homage to the intricate flavours imparted by the sherry wood during the cask maturation process.

Scott Adamson, Blender & Global Brand Ambassador at Tomatin Distillery, commenting on the new dram, said: "The global demand for well-matured sherried malts, particularly in markets like Asia, has inspired this latest addition to our core range. Tomatin has a unique ability to balance tradition with innovation, embracing our time-honoured techniques and contemporary practices to push the boundaries of flavour exploration. For over a century, Tomatin has featured sherry casks in our maturation process, and this new release stands as the next evolution of this tradition.

"Our 12 Year Old Sherry Cask captures the essence of our renowned 12 Year Old, enhancing its signature smoothness and focusing its aromatic profile to create a sherry cask whisky with a depth of flavour that is luxuriously indulgent."

I haven't had a chance to taste the new Tomatin 12 Year Old Sherry Cask yet so I cant comment on its quality or just how big a sherried dram but i will update you when I do get a chance to taste it, meanwhile the official tasting note is below for you to consider. It is bottled at 40% ABV and has a RRP of £52, it brings Tomatinís core range portfolio to six, offering a diverse range of expressions matured in different cask types, each with their own distinctive flavours and unique characteristics.

Tomatin 12 Year Old Sherry Cask Review

Bottled at 40% ABV.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Butterscotch infused with lovely enticingly rich sherried fruit, apple and ripe pear, a touch of orange, sweet sultanas and dark cherries.

Taste: A deliciously smooth sweet sherried fruit delivery, raisins and sultanas with a honeyed edge is closely followed by some slightly zesty orange. A gentle sweet vanilla sweetness peaks through from behind the fruit and just the slightest wee touch of cloves hiding there also, nutmeg and then a late gentle touch of cinnamon and dry ginger and a light dusting of pepper.

Finish: A longish length finish were the fruit tussles with a little peppery spice and mildly drying oak for a while before bowing out.

Comment: For a 40% ABV dram it is packed full of delicious sherried fruit flavour, there are some quality sherry casks at play here. A very welcome addition to the Tomatin range that wont disappoint if you enjoy a sherried dram.

SMW Whisky Score 90/100
