The English Sherry Cask Scoops WWA Best Single Malt Award

22nd March 2024
The English Sherry Cask which was recently released into the Norfolk distillery's core range has been named the Best Single Malt at the annual World Whiskies Awards.

The English Sherry CaskA trailblasing English distillery, which opened its doors a mere 17 years ago, is now basking in the glory of winning one of the most prestigious awards in the global whisky industry - the Best Single Malt at the annual World Whiskies Awards.

Located in Norfolk, The English Distillery made history as the first operational whisky distillery in over a century when it commenced operations in 2006. Recently, it achieved an even more remarkable feat by triumphing over formidable competition from some of the world's oldest and rarest whiskies. The award-winning whisky, a sherry cask matured single malt, was launched less than six months ago to resounding critical acclaim.

Hand-bottled at its Breckland-based distillery, The English Sherry Cask is an unpeated single malt whisky that underwent maturation entirely in the finest PX sherry casks, resulting in a remarkable expression that the distillery describes as "well worth the wait."

The distillery received news of its global triumph amidst the illustrious gathering of the whisky industry's finest at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London on Wednesday evening, March 20th. The event, organised by Whisky Magazine, celebrated "the best people, places, and products in the whisky world."

Founded by farmer James Nelstrop to realize a lifelong dream, The English Distillery, under the guidance of the renowned Master Distiller Ian Henderson, embarked on the journey of crafting exceptional single malt whiskies in England, filling its dunnage warehouses with this ambition. The distillery's mission was particularly significant given the absence of whisky-making in the country for a century.

True to its commitment to quality, all of The English Distillery's whiskies, including the award-winning one, are made from locally grown barley sourced from the Nelstrop family farms. Every step of the distillation process - from milling and mashing to distilling in traditional copper stills and maturing in oak casks - occurs on-site at the distillery.

Since the passing of his father James in 2014, Andrew Nelstrop has led the 20-strong team at the charming distillery, continuing the legacy of producing exceptional English single malt whisky.

Andrew said: "We’re stunned. Whilst any whisky maker hopes to win an award, winning the big one is the realisation of my father’s sole goal of creating world class single malt whiskies in England, and sharing them with whisky lovers around the world."

Father of two Andrew, whose wife Katy works alongside him as The English Distillery’s Marketing Director, added: 2This is a super way to celebrate our 18th year of whisky distilling. It’s a testament to our distillers’ work and I know my father would have been hugely proud of this achievement, as are we.

"As the English Whisky category continues to grow with pace, this award is another milestone for whisky making in England, particularly when it’s judged against some of the finest single malt whiskies from around the world, including Scotland."

The winning whisky boasts aromas of rich dark fruits from the sherry-filled casks, which combine in a nose of raw honey and vanilla, leading to a burst of sweet toffee, cherries and digestives on the palate. The result is a wonderfully balanced and rich whisky that is not outshone by the wood.

Bottled at 46% ABV, non chill filtered and natural in colour, The English Sherry Cask is a no age statement whisky that is part of the distillery’s core range, which includes The English Original and The English Smokey (both RRP £47.50, 70cl bottle). The English Sherry Cask has a RRP of £60, all of the whiskies are available f
rom specialist online whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt but I suspect The English Sherry Cask will now prove difficult to get hold of given this award.
