The Talisker distillery was founded in 1830 by two farmers, Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill. Like other farmers they saw whisky making as a sideline. By 1880 it was a lot more than just a sideline, Talisker whisky was starting to get noticed. The famous writer Robert Louis Stevenson even referred to it in a poem entitled "The Scotsman's Return from Abroad", he wrote "The king o' drinks, as I conceive it, Talisker, Islay or Glenlivit". Stevenson's words clearly had their own effect. The workforce quickly grew and Talisker became the successful enterprise, which it remains to this day.

The distillery was closed during the second world war, and again after a fire which destroyed the stillroom in 1960. It was 1962 before repairs where completed and the distillery was back in production.

Today Talisker malt whisky belongs to UDV, and is part of UDV's extremely popular Classic Malts Collection.  As well as being sold as single malt a part of the malt produced at Talisker goes into blends such as Johnnie Walker and White Horse. This malt is always very highly rated by whisky connoisseurs, and so it should be.
