Douglas Laing
& Co. unveils Strathearn Highland Single
Malt Batch 03

Douglas Laing & Co. continues the
development of its Strathearn Highland
Single Malt range with the release of
Batch 03, the latest small-batch
expression from one of Scotland's
smallest traditional distilleries.
The new release continues the evolution
of Strathearn's Highland Single Malt,
building on the character established by
the previous batches while introducing a
richer, more sherry-forward profile. The
whisky is said to retain the
distillery's established maturation
recipe of ex-bourbon, virgin oak and
ex-sherry oak casks, although Batch 03
places a greater emphasis on sherry oak
influence to enhance the depth and
richness of the spirit.
Batch 03 is a vatting of 31 carefully
selected casks, combining both inherited
stocks and spirit distilled since
Douglas Laing acquired the distillery.
The release reflects the company's
growing understanding of Strathearn's
distinctive spirit style as it continues
to shape the future of the Perthshire
distillery.
The whisky is said to open with aromas
of toasted malt, barley sugar, dark
honey and warming spice. On the palate,
buttery biscuit sweetness is joined by
notes of chocolate and toffee, leading
into a long finish of oak, cocoa and
soft leather. It is bottled at 50% ABV,
without added colouring or chill
filtration, in keeping with Douglas
Laing's commitment to presenting whisky
in its natural form.
Despite its continued development,
Strathearn remains firmly committed to
its traditional small-scale production
methods. Every production shift yields
just a single cask of whisky, with a
team of three distillers crafting the
spirit using Maris Otter malt. The
distillery continues to focus on
producing a rich, creamy Highland Single
Malt that blends traditional techniques
with a modern approach while maintaining
its emphasis on quality.
Batch 03 is presented in Strathearn's
distinctive bespoke acorn-shaped bottle
and premium packaging, reflecting the
distillery's guiding philosophy that
"From small acorns, great oaks grow."
Angela Brown, Lead Distiller at
Strathearn, commented: "Every batch is
an opportunity to better understand and
refine Strathearn's unique spirit. With
Batch 03, we've carefully increased the
influence of our Sherry casks to add
further richness and complexity, while
ensuring the distillery's signature
creamy character remains at the
forefront. It's a whisky that balances
tradition with progression, showcasing
the quality of our spirit and the
thoughtful approach we take to every
stage of the maturation process."
