Speyburn, one
of Speyside’s most picturesque
distilleries, will open to the public
permanently after 126 years.

Following the successful public opening
at this year's Spirit of Speyside
Festival, one of the most picturesque
distilleries in Speyside will now be
permanently open to the public. Whisky
enthusiasts can look forward to an
authentic behind-the-scenes experience
of Speyside distilling life.
Speyburn Distillery in Rothes, known for
producing award-winning single malt
whiskies behind closed doors for 126
years, will open its doors to visitors
starting from August 1st. Booking for
the Distillery's three daily tours,
running from Tuesdays to Saturdays, is
now available on Speyburn's website.
The decision to make this milestone
change came after the overwhelming
success of special one-off events during
the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival.
The positive response and sold-out
tickets within 12 hours led to Speyburn
winning the prestigious 'Best New Event'
award at the festival.
Previously hidden from fans, the new
tours will allow visitors to witness
firsthand how this acclaimed single malt
is crafted. Guests can enjoy an
exploratory 1 hour 45 minutes tour of
the Distillery, nestled in a beautiful
leafy glen on the edge of Forres near
Aberlour. The location retains the
serene charm that attracted entrepreneur
and founder John Hopkins to build the
distillery there in 1897.
Original buildings, features, and
stonework still stand, inviting guests
to immerse themselves in Speyburn's
world. From the crystal-clear water
sourced from the Granty Burn to the
filling of casks in traditional dunnage
warehouses, the experience offers a
genuine peek into Speyside's best-kept
secrets.
A highlight for whisky enthusiasts is a
captivating visit to Speyburn's Old Drum
Maltings, a traditional building housing
rarely seen vintage equipment on three
impressive floors. Mothballed half a
century ago and perfectly preserved, it
offers a unique glimpse into Speyside's
distilling history.
In addition to the tour's richness,
visitors will learn about Speyburn's
commitment to the environment and the
measures taken to ensure their whisky is
one of the most sustainably-produced in
the market today.
Speyburn Distillery Manager Euan
Henderson explained that opening to
visitors has been a long-held dream for
the Distillery team, and that the time
is finally right for it to become a
reality. He said: "There is something
very special about the setting and
atmosphere at Speyburn, perhaps because
it’s quite a hidden distillery and one
that has gone about the business of
making award-winning drams that are
loved the world over in a very quiet and
modest way. But now it’s time to let the
world in and we couldn’t be more
excited!
"There’s no artifice about the visitor
experience we have created. This will be
a true taste of Speyside distillery life
that will offer an accessible and
enjoyable experience for all. This is
about the people who make our whiskies
welcoming guests into our home to share
a taste of Speyburn single malts and the
stories and secrets of how they are
made. There’s 126 years of previously
unseen distilling history here just
waiting to be discovered in the heart of
Speyside - so make sure you don’t miss
your slot on one of our tours this
summer."
