The Scotch
Malt Whisky Society launches Caskmaster
2026 blind tasting championship.

Whisky lovers
across Europe will have the chance to
put their palates to the test this
summer as The Scotch Malt Whisky Society
(SMWS) launches its first UK blind
whisky tasting championship, Caskmaster
2026.
Open to both members and non-members,
the competition invites everyone from
experienced whisky enthusiasts to
ambitious newcomers to compete in a
series of blind tasting heats, with the
ultimate prize including a lifetime
Society membership and an exclusive
whisky retreat in Speyside.
Following the success of a similar
competition run by the Society's
Australian branch, Caskmaster 2026 marks
the first time the championship has been
staged in the UK. The competition
reflects the Society's long-standing
philosophy that flavour matters more
than distillery names, challenging
participants to rely entirely on their
senses.
Four qualifying heats will take place
across the Society's UK Members' Rooms
during August and September, with the
top five competitors from each heat
progressing to the Grand Final at The
Vaults in Leith, Edinburgh, on Thursday
12 November 2026.
Each contestant will have 30 minutes to
nose and taste eight carefully selected
Society drams before identifying each
whisky from a line-up of nine possible
options. Competitors must complete the
challenge individually, with no
conferring, and the five finalists from
each heat will be announced live on the
night.
Tickets cost £50 and include the eight
tasting drams as well as a Society
supper. There is no additional charge
for finalists attending the Grand Final,
while the five qualifiers from the
London heat will also have their travel
and accommodation to Edinburgh provided.
The Caskmaster 2026 champion will
receive a lifetime membership to The
Scotch Malt Whisky Society alongside one
of just 14 places on The Speysider, a
bespoke four-day whisky retreat taking
place from 12 to 15 March 2027. Hosted
by Mitch Bechard of CopperCairn—a Keeper
of the Quaich, author and host of Not
Another Whisky Podcast—the experience
includes private transport, specially
selected drams and access to exclusive
whisky experiences and locations rarely
available to visitors.
Founded in Edinburgh in 1983, The Scotch
Malt Whisky Society has built an
international reputation around its
unique approach to whisky. Rather than
revealing the distillery behind each
single cask bottling, every whisky is
released under an evocative name
inspired by its flavour profile, with
titles such as Red Wine and Brine in the
Old Coal Mine and Lavender Honey and
Chimney Lobsters. Today, the Society has
more than 41,000 members worldwide.
Calum Lawson, Member Experience Manager
at SMWS said: “At the Society, we have
always believed that flavour should do
the talking. Caskmaster puts that to the
ultimate test. This is whisky as it
should be, shared, debated and enjoyed,
but with a healthy dose of competition
thrown in. It’s a rare opportunity to
test your palate against likeminded
people, and, for one person, to walk
away with a prize that will last a
lifetime.”
The qualifying heats will be held at:
- The Vaults,
Leith – Wednesday 12 August
- Queen
Street, Edinburgh – Wednesday 19
August
- Bath Street,
Glasgow – Wednesday 26 August
- 19 Greville
Street, London – Wednesday 2

Doors open at

6.30pm.
