The SMWS 28.120 A Belter For America

Introducing The SMWS A Pure Belter 28.120 — a limited-edition whisky distilled at Tullibardine Distillery on the 12 May 2015 and bottled to celebrate Scotland's return to the World Cup. Best of all, it is available to everyone, not just Society members.

A special half bottle of whisky, ideal for Scotland fans heading to America this summer, has been created to mark the nation’s long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage.

With less than eight weeks to go until Scotland's first World Cup match in 28 years, this limited-edition release is the perfect companion for supporters travelling to the US or enjoying the action from home.

Bottled in honour of Scotland's dramatic qualification, A Belter for America comes in a 35cl half-size bottle featuring a label design inspired by the now-iconic overhead kick against Denmark at Hampden Park — the goal that helped launch Scotland's road back to the World Cup.

The name is a playful tribute to Letter from America by Scotland's other famous exports, The Proclaimers, making this whisky a fitting travel companion wherever fans are watching this summer.

Released by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), the world’s leading whisky club, the bottle is one of two limited-edition expressions created to celebrate Scotland’s return to the global stage for the first time since France 1998.

A Belter for America has undergone additional maturation in a 1st fill Oloroso sherry butt, resulting in notes of dark roasted coffee beans, chocolate, caramel and candied fruits. Priced at £39, it is available now. In a rare move for the usually members-only club, this bottle is open to all whisky fans.

The SMWS is known for exploring whisky by flavour rather than brand, while keeping the identity of its distillery sources closely guarded. Each bottle is labelled with a unique code instead of a distillery name, and fittingly A Belter for America comes from Distillery 28 — surely a lucky number for Scotland supporters.

Julie Roberts, Innovation Manager at SMWS, said: "Scotland's qualification has been a long time coming, but as any whisky lover knows, good things come to those who wait.

"A Belter for America is for everyone who wants to raise a glass to the team, whether they are watching from a pub in Edinburgh or making the trip across the pond. We can't think of a better way to get into the spirit of the tournament!"

Review

Bottled at 61% ABV.

Producer's Tasting Notes:

We opened a vacuum-sealed container of dark-roasted coffee beans, enjoying notes of chocolate, caramel and candied fruits. Huge on the palate, this was spicy and peppery at first but then delivered the deep, dark sweetness of muscovado sugar. Following reduction we expanded our coffeeish contemplations, finding comparisons to camp coffee, Turkish coffee or carajllo, the Spanish version of an Irish coffee using brandy, rum or mezcal. To taste, we had an espresso romano, combining a coffee shot with a candied lemon slice and a teaspoon of sugar. At eight years of age, we combined selected casks from the same distillery. We then returned the single malt into a variety of different casks to develop further. This is one of those casks.
